Drawing and painting fruit is a joy for the botanical artist. The subjects stay in one place, they keep their form and colour for a long time plus they have a wide range of textures to explore.
One of the nicest ways to start the botanical art process is to visit an orchard just before harvest and spend some time exploring, drawing and, in some cases, eating the fruit in question.
At RHS Wisley, just by junction 10 of the M25, the Orchard is a living library of over 1,300 fruit cultivars with particularly good collections of pear, apple, plum and damson. There are also some quirky quinces and mysterious medlars to be discovered.
Why not see for yourself on our ABBA “Picnic in the Orchard” day on Saturday 21st September. Bring your own materials and spend an hour, a couple of hours or all day exploring Wisley’s fine fruit collection while catching up with other botanical art enthusiasts.
You do not have to be a member of ABBA to come along and enjoy yourself.
